Ocú is a township and head city of the Ocú district in the province of Herrera, Republic of Panama. The locality has 7,006 inhabitants.

The population of Ocú is made up mostly of mestizos, white descendants (direct and indirect) of Spaniards, and at the beginning of the 20th century the first families of Chinese origin arrived, which is the minority and, according to the 2010 census, it is made up of a total of 15,539 people.

One of the most folkloric events of the Panamanian people where the indigenous customs carried out by the peasant of the last century are represented is the Manito National Festival, which is celebrated in the middle of August. Other of its festivals is the San Sebastián Fair, in addition to its carnival, which is characterized by being the only one in the country that, in addition to having Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo, has a third street, Calle Centro.

Clothing

In Ocú informal clothing is worn, the population is mostly mestizo and white. There are no indigenous people in the area. It is common to see both farmers and ranchers using their painted hat, cutarras, shirt and pants.

Gastronomy

The mining gastronomy, takes advantage of the benefits of the crops of the region, with which they present exquisite characteristic dishes, among them we can find:

 • Rice: parboiled grain, very popular in the kitchen of the district, it is usually prepared with some meat or vegetable of season.

• Puff pastry: frying made from flour and egg, generally consumed at breakfast.

• New Corn Muffins or Torrejitas: frying made from a dough prepared with freshly harvested corn, generally consumed with coffee or tea.

• Empanadas: fried foods prepared with flour with egg or corn, prepared in such a way that some meat or cheese can be found in its center.

• Carimañolas: fried foods prepared with ground cassava, also with meat in the center.

 • Heavy: homemade cream prepared with seasonal fruits, mainly based on Nancé.

• Tamales: Another favorite is the pot tamale and the tamale wrapped in banana leaves. This tamale is different from the tamales cooked by Mexicans, since the dough is corn and in which pieces of chicken or meat are found in the center of the tamale.
