Guararé
Festival Nacional de Guararé |
Guararé is a county of Los Santos Province in Panama. There is about 10,000 inhabitants. The capital lies at the city of Guararé, but there are more towns. Now, let's find out what we should know about this beautiful place.
Background
Guararé was founded on January 21, 1864. This town was originated when, after the pirate Henry Morgan's attack on Panama’s City, a group of colonizers moved to the lower part of Azuero, and settled on the banks of a river in the dominions of the cacique Guararí or Guarase. There Spardians disputed the land with the Indigenous people and brought their customs. Gaspar de Espinosa relates in his chronicles that after the port was built, barges, in which Diego de Hurtado visited the coasts of Montijo and Chiriquí, were built.
Toponymy
The name of Guararé is undoubtedly of Ngöbe origin and with it the fish is named "ray" or "manta ray". It probably comes from two ngöbe terms: "gwa", which means "fish", and "arare" which means "ray". This was the name of the cacique found by the Spaniards under the command of Gaspar de Espinoza, in 1516 in the Azuero region that today comprises the Guararé county. The Spaniards also used to assign to the region or chiefdoms the same name of the cacique who dominated there. Occasionally, the Spanish, instead of Guararé, wrote down "Guararí '. The suffix" ri ", according to the Ngöbe language, indicates the existence of a river or stream. For this reason," Guarari "means" River of the Ray Fish ".
Culture
When mentioning Guararé we also talk about folklore, the Virgin of Las Mercedes, the Mejorana’s National Festival, the beauty of its landscapes and the attachment to our traditions that the inhabitants of Guararé demonstrate.
The Mejorana’s National Festival is better known as the largest Folkloric exhibition in our country. It dates back to 1949 when Dr. Manuel Fernando Zárate, studying in Europe, witnessed as in those festivities, a tribute was paid to a specific instrument. Upon his return to Panama, he thought of having a Festival that would enhance the indigenousness of the town and the pride of Guararé "La Mejorana".It was then when he met on July 24, 1949 with a group from the community to present his idea and together give shape to that motivation of highlighting his people in parties that would later become the most important festival in our country.
Nowadays, the town of Guararé has been host of this Festival for more than 50 years and it is a place where special love is kept for the Virgin of Las Mercedes, patron saint of the people of Guararé.
The festivities of the patron saint Virgin de Las Mercedes and La Mejorana are celebrated every year from September 23 to 27 in the Guararé district. The virgin was taking great importance, due to the quantity and quality of the miracles that she achieved for her devotees.
Professor Manuel Fernando Zárate and his wife, Dora Pérez de Zárate were faithful witnesses to the miracles of the Virgin and joined the thousands of people in the province and throughout the country who venerated and thanked the Blessed Virgin for the favors granted. This unquestionable faith of the Zárate couple was due to the healing miracle of one of the daughters.
