A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHITRE
Chitre was founded on October 19, 1848 as a parochial district. When Herrera Province was created, Chitre was named its capital. During the presidency of Arnulfo Arias Madrid in 1941, the province of Herrera joined the province of Los Santos, forming a single province called "Azuero." Chitre was the capital of this joint province. However, the two provinces were separated again in 1944 with Chitre as the provincial capital of Herrera.

OCTOBER 19
Every October 19, chitreanos celebrate the founding of Chitre. It is a special and colorful celebration. This celebration begins with a civic parade, where the music bands of the different schools in the area perform. Then, there are parades with beautiful "carretas" that pass through the main streets of Chitre. The women wear their most beautiful "polleras" and the men wear their "montuno" on that special day.

Chitre has many beautiful places to visit. In this space I will show you some of them.
Let's start...
-ST. JOHN BAPTIST CATHEDRAL-
The St. John Baptist Cathedral is considered
the main monument of Chitre. It is located in the heart of Chitre. According to the Chitre's history, its
construction began a few years after the arrival of Father Meliton Martin at
the Agallito port in 1892.
The St. John Baptist Cathedral has beautiful
architecture that attracts the attention of all the people who visit it for its
strange and original finishes and its wooden altar which projects the colonial
past. It is an original Cathedral which combines the traditional and the modern
at the same time with its impressive murals and statues.
I would like to show you some images of my
sister's First Holy Communion, which is a Christian ceremony that can be seen
every year in this Cathedral.
In each
mass of this Cathedral, you can enjoy an
atmosphere of peace, faith and joy.
This is the first place you should visit in Chitre!!
-UNION PARK-
The Union Park is one of the
symbols that represents the history of Chitre. For this reason, most of the
characteristic activities of Chitre are carried out in this park.
It is important to mention that in this park is
the St. John Baptist Cathedral shown above.
This park is a nice and colorful place where
you can take beautiful pictures, both day and night. Look at the photos below. They are my cousins. I took them these
photos in the Union Park last year.
-"CHITRE PROGRESA" WATER RESERVE TANK-
This water
reserve tank is one of the first structures built with steel in Panama. This
great engineering work was completed in 1952, when the necessary tools to build
the tank did not yet exist in Panama. It was built with a lot of effort and
imagination. That is the reason why this tank is so important for chitreanos.
The “Chitre
Progresa” water reserve tank is located near the Union Park. Lights were incorporated around the tank some time ago, so it is very nice to visit it at night.
Look at the photo I attached above. It is so beautiful, isn’t it?
-HERRERA MUSEUM-
The Herrera Museum was created in 1984. The historical pieces in this museum have been collected or donated by the inhabitants of Chitre to the museum for their high historical value. This is a really interesting place to visit in Chitre which has a two-story structure and five rooms that are:
